In-form Son Heung-min posing real selection dilemmas

Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min went into Gameweek 6 as the highest-rated player on WhoScored from Europe’s top 5 leagues and the South Korean International did not disappoint. He recorded another brace in Spurs’ 2-1 win at Middlebrough, in a man of the match performance that saw his rating rise even further.

Spurs went close in the 2015/16 title race, boasting some impressive statistics along the way but they ran out of steam towards the end of the campaign, as a lack of squad depth told.

Mauricio Pochettino has addressed this problem in the summer transfer market, bringing in the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen, so the emergence of Son, who started just 13 league games in his first season at White Hart Lane, is a real bonus.

The Tottenham manager played a 4-2-3-1 formation last season but he now has the personnel to mix things up a bit and deployed a 4-3-3 shape for the win at Boro. Son is comfortable playing as the the left forward in the latter or as the left midfielder in the former, two team shapes that were used predominantly in his final two seasons at Bayer Leverkusen. The 24 year old managed to hit double figures for Bundesliga goals in both of those campaigns and is well on course to do the same, if he retains his first team place at Spurs.

Son has returned from the Olympics in sparkling form and looks undroppable at the moment. He has 16 international goals to his name but the big question for fantasy football managers going forward is whether  he will retain his place in the team and at whose expense?

The likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Érik Lamela are popular fantasy picks, while Mousa Dembélé has returned from his prolonged suspension, giving Pochettino a plethora of options.

There’s a big week ahead for Spurs, with a trip to Moscow for a Champions League tie, followed by a Premier League game at White Hart Lane against league leaders Manchester City, so Pochettino will be concerned by a growing injury list, with Dembélé, Sissoko and Eric Dier joining Harry Kane and Danny Rose in the treatment room.

Son has completed the full 90 minutes in each of the league games he has started this season and he’s in the sort of form that could derail City’s title bid.
