Premier League Fantasy Preview: Liverpool
After a shaky start, Jürgen Klopp has steared Liverpool to a top 4 finish in each of the last 2 seasons but the icing on the cake has to be an appearance in the 2017/18 Champions League Final against holders’ Real Madrid.
Former Dortmund coach Klopp is an enthusiastic, passionate presence on the touchline and even though there has been a growing suspicion that Liverpool can no longer attract top quality players to the club, that may all be about to change.
The Reds’ 2017/18 campaign was dominated by 3 transfers – the arrival of the explosive Mohamed Salah from Roma, the Philippe Coutinho will he stay/will he go saga and the eventual capture of Virgil van Dijk, a player Liverpool allegedly ‘tapped-up‘.
Salah had a season that will never be forgotten while Coutinho eventually signed for Barcelona, turning the Fab Four into a Fab Three.
However, it was the capture of van Dijk that proved highly significant, with the Dutchman going on to play a pivotal role between emerging full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson, in shoring up a porous back-line.
The Reds conceded just 13 goals in their last 16 Premier League games, a figure that was only bettered by Manchester United and they finished the Premier League season undefeated at Anfield.
Transfers News
Guinea international Naby Keïta is expected to join the club in the summer and he should prove to be an adequate replacement for Emre Can, who is rumoured to be on his way out of Anfield.
Liverpool tactics and playing formation
Klopp’s teams are famous for their energetic pressing game deep into opposition territory, which can leave them open to counter-attack but their high-tempo game suits their players too and 4-3-3 is now by far his most-used set-up.
