Bundesliga Forwards – 5 To Follow
The Bundesliga has thrown up some interesting and surprising top scorers over the years, with Grafite, Alexander Meier and Theofanis Gekas all taking the prize in recent years.
More famous names are battling it out for the Torjäger-Kanone award this year, but there are hidden gems to be found for fantasy football players alongside the established global stars.
Here is the Fantasy Football Portal guide to five of the top strikers playing in the Bundesliga.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
African Footballer of the Year award winner Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is currently the top scorer in the league, having hit 20 goals from 19 matches for Borussia Dortmund this season.
But Aubameyang, who is available at $23m for the upcoming fixture against Hannover on FanTeam, insists helping his team to win is more important than scoring more goals than his rivals and he recently told Kicker: “It’s secondary whether I am in front of [Robert] Lewandowski or not. It’s of higher priority that we continue to win our matches.”
The Gabon international striker’s incredible goal-a-game record is even more astonishing given he has only take an average of four shots per match so far this season.
If Dortmund are to chase down Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga, Aubameyang will have to keep up his form, having scored both goals in his team’s recent 2-0 win against Ingolstadt.
The pacy striker himself has his sights on breaking Gerd Müller’s 40-goal season record.
Javier Hernández
Deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, Javier Hernández has made Manchester United’s manager Louis Van Gaal look rather foolish during his time at Bayer Leverkusen.
The Mexico international striker has been given the Bundesliga’s Player of the Month award three times in a row having scored 13 times in 15 league matches.
Hernández is in the middle of a superb hot streak, having hit nine goals in his last seven games in all competitions, including a hat-trick in a 5-0 home win against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The star has even been linked with a move back to the Premier League despite only leaving United six months ago, with Arsenal among his reputed suitors, but the 27-year-old will continue to be a fine fantasy football selection for Bundesliga fans until the end of the current season.
Robert Lewandowski
Aubameyang’s closest rival for the Torjäger-Kanone this season is Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, who is enjoying his best year so far at the club.
Lewandowski is the top-rated striker in the Bundesliga by WhoScored, earning a score of 7.86 for his 19 goals from 16 Bundesliga starts so far this season.
The Poland international has been even more impressive in his club’s Champions League campaign, where he hit seven goals in six group matches as Pep Guardiola’s men cruised into the knockout round, where they are set to take on Juventus.
With 29 goals in all competitions this season, Lewandowski can judge himself unlucky to have been missed out from the top three contenders for the 2015 Ballon d’Or, although with competition like Neymar, Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez it is easy to see why he was harshly overlooked.
Raffael
Brazil international Raffael is far from the most prolific Bundesliga striker in this list, but unlike many of the other names we have picked out he is also a reliable creator for his side.
Raffael has scored seven goals in the league for Borussia Mönchengladbach so far this season, but it is the 30-year-old’s haul of eight assists that is potentially even more impressive.
With superb dribbling skills and a dangerous long-range shot, Raffael is a terrific budget option for Bundesliga fantasy managers struggling to afford the likes of Lewandowski and Aubameyang.
Salomon Kalou
Only six players have scored 10 or more goals in the Bundesliga so far this season and Hertha Berlin striker Salomon Kalou is up there with the best having reached the landmark by scoring in his side’s last fixture, a six-goal thriller at Werder Bremen that ended up finishing 3-3.
Former Chelsea forward Kalou only scored six goals last season so his improvement this term has been vast, although he is yet to record an assist for his team in the current campaign.
The Ivory Coast international has been in particularly good form in the cup, where he has scored three goals in three ties as Hertha Berlin have progressed to the quarter-final stage.
Kalou’s best performance so far this season came in a 3-1 win at Hannover 96 in early November, where he struck a superb hat-trick to secure a vital three points for his team.
