When the red mist descends

Gameweek 23 promises to be the most even round of games for quite some time. This is great news for fantasy football managers since it should result in more diverse line-ups being seen across all competition formats.

Manchester City and Everton have the highest projected goals based on the current betting lines but both sides are still pencilled in at less than 2 goals.

The Midlands derby between West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa promises to be a low-scoring affair and fantasy managers could easily be forgiven for targeting players from either side with clean sheet possibilities in mind. However, a word of warning – this could develop into a volatile fixture, especially with the Baggies having the opportunity to push Villa closer to the Premier League exit door. Selecting players from either side injects an extra degree of risk due to the likelihood of a high ‘cards’ make-up and the associated negative fantasy points that may be incurred. Robert Madley will be the man in the middle and he has dished out 7 red cards and 96 yellow cards during the 32 games in which he has officiated.

Claudio Yacob and Chris Brunt both look vulnerable and will do well not to pick up a caution here while Craig Gardner and the controversial James McClean are both tagged as ‘weak’ for discipline by WhoScored and should probably be avoided at all costs this weekend.

Leandro Bacuna and Jordan Ayew both have 5 yellow cards apiece already for Aston Villa this season.

We’re expecting ‘Bobby’ Madley to have his work cut-out to keep a lid on this one and it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world to see the red mist descending on one or two of the chief protagonists!
