French Grand Prix – Preview

After a 10 year absence, the French Grand Prix returns to Formula 1

The oldest Grand Prix race returns to Circuit Paul Ricard with many pundits and fans hoping for an exciting race.

Monaco offered little in wheel to wheel racing which is often the case at a tight and slow street circuit, so it was somewhat surprising that the Canadian Grand Prix offered very little either.

Sebastian Vettel won with ease, unchallenged from start to finish and in doing so, retook the championship lead from Lewis Hamilton by one point.

What to expect

Lewis Hamilton has no idea but hopes that the race is more exciting than Monaco or Canada whilst team mate Valterri Bottas feels that the Ferrari will be the favourites despite benefitting from an expected engine upgrade.

Toto Wolff described Vettel’s drive in Canada as a ‘Wake up Call’ and Bottas feels that Mercedes need to ‘raise their game’ if they are to overcome a strong prancing horse this weekend.

Over to you Sebastian !!

Tyres

The Ultra, Super and Soft tyres will be available this weekend with Red Bull in particular choosing to take the more conservative approach in their allocation. With the Red Bull having run smoother on the softer rubber than rivals Ferrari and Mercedes, it was a bit of a surprise to hear that Red Bull had chosen the fewest allocation of Ultrasoft tyres for this weekend.

Renault’s Homecoming

After an encouraging performance last time out in Canada, Renault will be hoping for more of the same on home turf. With continued work on their chassis and improved performance from a recently upgraded power unit, Renault are hopeful of a strong performance in front of their fans.

With four Renault powered cars finishing in the top 10 in Canada, Renault, Redbull and Mclaren will all be hoping for some good points this weekend in France.
