Could Nunez Exit Fund Liverpool’s Move for Isak?
PIF’s Power Play: Clever Strategy or Club Clash?

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez is reportedly being eyed by Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal, sparking speculation that his potential departure could pave the way for the Reds to pursue Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
Al-Hilal, managed by Simone Inzaghi and backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), is said to be seriously considering a deal for Nunez. Should the Uruguayan make the move, it could help Liverpool balance their books and raise funds to chase their long-term target Isak.
Potential Conflict of Interest?
With both Al-Hilal and Newcastle operating under the PIF umbrella, questions have emerged about whether this scenario creates a conflict of interest—would one PIF-owned club gain at the cost of another?
There’s also uncertainty about whether Nunez, 26, is ready to swap European competition for Middle Eastern football. Other clubs, including Serie A champions Napoli, have also shown interest in the Liverpool striker this window.
BBC Sport has reported that Newcastle recently rejected a £110 million bid for Isak, valuing the Swedish international closer to the £150 million mark.
“It makes me question where Newcastle rank in PIF’s list of priorities,” said Charlotte Robson, a Newcastle writer, in an interview with the BBC. “Most fans would prefer Isak be given a better deal and kept long-term.”
Do Liverpool Even Need to Sell?
According to football finance analyst Kieran Maguire, Liverpool may not need to offload Nunez to meet financial rules. “The club has space within PSR regulations to spend an additional £200-250 million,” he told BBC.
This summer, Liverpool have already brought in names like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giorgi Mamardashvili for a combined £265 million. Meanwhile, player sales including Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold have brought in about £115 million.
Maguire believes the narrative around a backroom deal between PIF clubs is overblown: “There’s no solid evidence suggesting this is a coordinated move. It looks more like Liverpool simply taking advantage of market opportunities.”
Isak’s Status Remains Unclear
Isak, who joined Newcastle for £60 million from Real Sociedad in 2022, played a vital role in their Carabao Cup win and strong season finish. Yet his absence from the club’s recent pre-season tour, due to a reported thigh issue, has fuelled rumours of a possible departure.
Sources close to the player suggest he’s exploring a move, and he was recently spotted training solo at his old club Sociedad. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has maintained that Isak must “earn his way back” into the team, and confirmed no new bids had arrived following Liverpool’s initial approach.
