Austrian Grand Prix – Preview

The Formula 1 circus comes to Austria this weekend with the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Styria hosting the 10th race of 2018.

Lewis Hamilton holds a 14pt lead over rival Sebastian Vettel going into Sunday’s race after the Englishmen comfortably won in France last time out.

The second race in an F1 triple header sees Mercedes upping the anti with a major aero upgrade in a decisive move, they hope will put them ahead in their fight with Ferrari.

There is also an upgrade for Renault powered cars with a new lightweight MGU-K introduced. It is understood however, that only the Factory Renault and Mclaren’s Vandoorne’s car will run it as the others may be hit with grid penalties should they choose to have the upgrade.

What to Expect

After first practice, it was Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton fastest with the other top six places taken by Ferrari and Red Bull but there were also good showings from Charles Leclerc in the Sauber and Pierre Gasly in the Honda powered Toro Rosso. Esteban Ocon (Force India) and Romain Grosjean (Haas) made up the top 10.

Unfortunately, it was another poor showing by both Williams and Mclaren teams with the latter under extreme pressure to perform after dumping Honda in Favour of Renault powered engines at the start of 2018.

Too tight to Call

Although Mercedes look favourites, this race is too tight to call and changing weather could play a part in both qualifying and the race. Sebastian Vettel will need to stop making silly mistakes having already dropped points in Baku and France if he is to stop Lewis Hamilton from clinching a 5th World Title.

Depending on how the new MGU-K works will determine whether we see a Red Bull on the podium this weekend.
