A Differential Captain

Why you should consider a differential captain to make up ground in those FPL mini-leagues?

José Mourino produced one of the biggest shocks of the season when he handed the much-maligned Marouane Fellaini the captain’s armband for Manchester United’s game at Sunderland.

Fellaini, himself, doesn’t have much upside from a Fantasy Premier League manager’s perspective but opting to give the armband to a ‘differential‘ candidate can pay dividends.

If you’re a regular visitor to Fantasy Football Portal’s unique goals contribution ratings, you might recall that we ear-marked Son Heung-min as a viable option in GW32.

The South Korean international did not disappoint, racking up an impressive 19 points under the Official Fantasy Premier League scoring format. That’s 38, if you gave him the armband!

Despite the  return to fitness of Harry Kane, Son is expected to keep his place, when Spurs host Bournemouth in GW33 and both players figure prominently in the latest captaincy rankings.

If there is one man you want in the trenches at the business end of the season, it is surely veteran manager Sam Allardyce. Crystal Palace are one of the sides involved in the upcoming double gameweek (GW34) but matches against Liverpool and Spurs look to be quite taxing. Big Sam is therefore likely to see Saturday’s clash with champions’ Leicester City as the ideal opportunity to help ease the Eagles’ relegation worries.

The Foxes are likely to have one eye on their Champions League 2nd leg quarter-final tie, so back Palace to take full advantage.

This brings Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke into the mix, Palace’s top 2 rated players on WhoScored, as GW33 armband differentials. Benteke, a Belgium international like Fellaini, can be a bit frustrating and is often caught offside but he’s a capable striker on his day. Allardyce excels at route one football and has now had sufficient time in charge of Palace, to have got his ideas across to the 6’3”Benteke.

With games running out, opting for a play like Benteke could be the catalyst to help you make up ground in any FPL mini-leagues you are participating in.
