Overlay

Overlay occurs when a fantasy sports contest does not attract enough paid entries to fully fund its guaranteed prize pool. In these situations, the platform contributes the shortfall, effectively increasing the value available to every participant.

Overlay is highly sought after by experienced daily fantasy sports (DFS) players because it creates a positive expected value (EV), giving entrants a better mathematical chance of making a profit.

How Overlay Works

Many DFS contests advertise a guaranteed prize pool regardless of how many people enter. If the contest fails to fill before the deadline, the operator must still pay the advertised prizes.

For example, a contest guarantees a £1,000 prize pool but only collects £700 in entry fees. The operator contributes the remaining £300, creating an overlay.

Why Overlay Is Valuable

Because the prize pool is larger than the total entry fees collected, every participant is effectively competing for additional money provided by the platform.

This improves the contest’s expected value and makes overlay contests particularly attractive to experienced fantasy managers.

How to Spot Overlay

Overlay is most likely to occur in guaranteed prize pool (GPP) contests that have not filled close to the entry deadline.

Fantasy managers often compare:

  • The guaranteed prize pool.
  • The contest entry fee.
  • The maximum number of entrants.
  • The current number of registered entries.

If there are significantly fewer entrants than required to fund the guaranteed prize pool, the contest may finish with an overlay.

Why Overlay Matters

Overlay is one of the few situations in fantasy sports where the mathematics work in the player’s favour. Although it does not guarantee success, entering contests with overlay can improve long-term profitability by increasing the expected value of every entry.
