Serie A Midfielders – 5 To Follow
Midfield is possibly the strongest area on the pitch for Serie A teams, who boast globally-renowned talents such as Paul Pogba and Marek Hamšík within their ranks.
With many Serie A teams seeking to dominate the ball, midfield is crucial and having a playmaker who can score and create goals is a must for any club hoping to challenge for league honours.
Here is our selection of the midfielders in Serie A worth considering for fantasy football teams.
Paul Pogba
Paul Pogba has developed into one of the top midfielders in world football in recent years, with his dominant performances in the middle of the park helping Juventus to a string of Serie A titles.
The France international, who is still just 22 years of age, was the one who got away for Manchester United, when they allowed the box-to-box star to leave the club as a young starlet.
Pogba has recorded five goals and five assists for Juventus in Serie A so far this season, with the star scoring the ultimate WhoScored rating of 10 out of 10 for his masterclass performance in a 4-0 win against Chievo in January.
Juventus are on a sensational winning streak as they chase down Scudetto leaders Napoli, with Pogba – who is often compared to his compatriot Patrick Vieira – undoubtedly their key player.
The challenge for Juventus will be holding on to Pogba as he is highly likely to be a target for super-rich clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester City when the transfer window opens again in the summer.
Marek Hamšík
Napoli’s charge to the top of Serie A this season has owed much to the superb form of Slovakia international midfielder Marek Hamšík.
With five goals and six assists across 24 starts in Serie A, Hamšík has been a consistent, reliable presence in the heart of the Ciucciarelli midfield.
Hamšík’s form has dipped a little in the last few weeks after the star scored in three successive league matches earlier in the year.
However, as the 28-year-old is also a set piece specialist, he is well worth selecting in daily fantasy football teams for his excellent all-round ability.
Giacomo Bonaventura
Giacomo Bonaventura has been arguably AC Milan’s best player in a tough season for the Rossoneri, who have improved recently with their unbeaten run currently standing at eight games.
Siniša Mihajlović has come under fire for Milan’s problems, but Bonaventura has done all he can to lead his side up the league table, contributing five goals and seven assists for a very healthy WhoScored rating of 7.50 for his Serie A performances.
Bonaventura’s excellent dribbling helps to get his team up the pitch and his long-range shooting is also a big threat for Milan, with his reliability and consistency making him a fine fantasy selection.
Miralem Pjanić
Set piece specialists are a must in daily fantasy football games and Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanić is arguably the best free-kick taker in Serie A.
The Bosnia international has already scored eight goals this season – more than almost every other midfielder in the league – as well as providing seven assists for his side. He’s valued at 7.2m on Oulala for Friday’s contests and looks like one for the short-list.
With Luciano Spalletti having recently returned to the dugout at the Stadio Olimpico, Pjanić’s form could improve even further under the coach who previously led the club to two Coppa Italia titles.
Riccardo Saponara
Our final Fantasy Football Portal pick for Serie A midfielders to name in your squads is a budget option – Empoli star Riccardo Saponara.
Empoli have been one of the surprise packages of the current season, sitting comfortably in the top half of the season and it is Saponara who has particularly caught the eye for his side.
Playing as an attacking midfielder, Saponara has scored five goals in 20 Serie A starts, while contributing a further seven assists for his side, for a decent WhoScored rating of 7.00.
Only two players in Serie A this season – Lorenzo Insigne of Napoli and Juventus striker Paulo Dybala – have bettered Saponara’s seven assists this season, showing just how impressive he has been for his team.
Miralem Pjanić looks good value at 7.2m on Oulala (vs Carpi, Budget 100m)
