What is a 6-pointer?

The term 6-pointer was first coined in English football following the introduction of the ‘3 points for a win‘ system back in 1981, with the reasoning behind it being that if one side collects 3 points, they are effectively depriving the opposition of claiming maximum points themselves.

It is used to describe situations where teams are closely matched in terms of league position but more commonly when referring to sides that are in or around the relegation zone.

This weekend’s Premier League schedule features 3 ‘crunch’ clashes that could easily be described as 6-pointers with Southampton hosting Stoke City at St Mary’s, Swansea City entertaining West Ham United at the Liberty Stadium and Watford  welcoming West Bromwich Albion to Vicarage Road.

All 3 fixtures are likely to be highly significant as the battle for Premier League survival heats up.

West Ham and Stoke have the worst defensive records in the division but our latest goal projections indicate that they do have a chance of securing a shut-out against their respective opponents this weekend.

The Saints have been very poor at converting chances, while Swansea have also struggled for goals, being the lowest scoring side in the division.

The two visiting clubs also boast in-form players as well, in the shape of Marko Arnautović and Xherdan Shaqiri, attackers that many Fantasy Premier League managers will be pinning their faith on this weekend.

Watford got a much needed home win against Everton in GW28, with Troy Deeney scoring the decisive goal, his first from open play this season and the Hornets will be keen to heap more misery on bottom club West Brom.

The Baggies are desperate to find a hero of their own, with the trap door seemingly beckoning them but fantasy football managers are unlikely to be getting too excited about any of their prospects ahead of GW29.

These clashes are the proverbial ‘6-pointers’ but who would bet against any of them ending in a goal-less draw?
