Storybook Chapter 1 – From Monte Carlo to Madrid
The Kid turns his attention back to his old teammate, The Tiger, who has become fascinated by the new fantasy football game and the mysterious methods of the Iron Tulip.
The Tiger is convinced that the experienced manager has discovered a secret formula for fantasy football success. The only problem is finding out where he keeps it.
The Tiger Returns
The Kid may have left Monte Carlo for Madrid, but his friendship with The Tiger remains an important part of the story.
Inspired by Colombian striker Radamel Falcao, The Tiger is confident, determined and rarely short of an idea. Once he becomes interested in the new fantasy football game, he quickly decides that ordinary research will not be enough.
He believes the Iron Tulip has discovered a winning formula.
Finding that formula becomes his new priority.
The Iron Tulip and the Secret Formula
The Iron Tulip is inspired by Dutch manager Louis van Gaal, whose methods, tactical reputation and distinctive personality made him one of football’s most recognisable figures.
To The Tiger, a manager with that much experience must know something that everybody else has missed.
He imagines that the Iron Tulip’s knowledge could be converted into a successful fantasy football strategy. Rather than studying form, statistics and fixtures, The Tiger begins looking for a shortcut.
That search leads him towards one of Storybook’s greatest mysteries.
The Satchel Enters the Story
The Iron Tulip is rarely seen without his satchel.
Nobody knows exactly what it contains, but that does not stop the speculation. It could hold tactical notes, team selections, secret calculations or the winning formula The Tiger believes he needs.
The Satchel gradually becomes more than a simple accessory. It develops into a recurring character and one of the longest-running jokes in the Storybook universe.
Everyone wants to know what is inside.
Nobody receives a convincing answer.
Fantasy Football and Football Management
The chapter plays with the idea that the knowledge required to manage a professional football team might also provide an unbeatable advantage in fantasy football.
In reality, the two activities are very different. A football manager must select a balanced team, prepare tactics and manage players, while a fantasy football manager is concerned with points, goals, assists and clean sheets.
The Tiger is not interested in those complications.
He is convinced that the Iron Tulip has already solved everything.
The Football Inspiration Behind the Comic
The Tiger was inspired by Radamel Falcao, who played alongside James Rodríguez at AS Monaco before joining Manchester United on loan in 2014.
The Iron Tulip was inspired by Louis van Gaal, the Manchester United manager during Falcao’s time at the club.
Storybook brought those real football connections into its fictional world, transforming managerial tactics, player relationships and fantasy football into a search for a mysterious winning formula.
Characters Featured
The Tiger
The Kid’s close friend and former teammate from Monte Carlo. The Tiger is loyal, confident and completely convinced that the Iron Tulip possesses knowledge that could help him dominate fantasy football.
The Iron Tulip
An experienced Dutch manager inspired by Louis van Gaal. His methods attract attention, but the mysterious satchel he carries generates even more interest.
The Satchel
A seemingly ordinary bag that becomes one of Storybook’s most persistent mysteries. The Tiger believes it may contain a secret football formula, although there is no evidence that anyone has ever seen inside it.
The Kid
The Kid does not dominate this chapter, but his friendship with The Tiger connects the events in England with the wider Storybook journey unfolding in Madrid.
Behind the Gag
The humour comes from The Tiger’s certainty that football success can be reduced to one hidden formula.
Instead of accepting that fantasy football requires judgement, patience and luck, he assumes somebody must already possess the answer.
The Iron Tulip’s satchel provides the perfect hiding place.
Whether it actually contains anything useful is another matter.
Looking Back
Originally published in 2015, this chapter expanded the Storybook universe beyond Madrid and introduced the mystery of The Satchel.
It also established The Tiger as a character who could pursue a questionable idea with complete confidence.
His search for answers now takes the story towards Germany, where the mystery surrounding the Iron Tulip and his methods continues.
