Playing the Satellites
Satellite contests provide daily fantasy football managers with the opportunity to win a seat to tournaments where lucrative prize money is on offer for a minimal outlay. A great example of how they work can be seen on DraftKings – for a buy-in of just $0.25, the winning entry will receive a ticket to one of their $30k Clean Sheet UEFA Champions League contests – the field is capped at 155 entries and the two featured fixtures are Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City v Newcastle United.
Due to the salary structure on DraftKings, stacking your line-up with all the obvious high profile stars from Spurs and Leicester is not really an option, so compromises will have to made along the way. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that the ‘late swap’ option really comes into play, with one game scheduled for Sunday and the other for Monday.
Rock-bottom Villa could go with a 3-man defence again, meaning that Alan Hutton and Aly Cissokho will be deployed as wing-backs so they could be good value picks based on their crossing potential. What sort of team Rafa Benitez puts out is anyone’s guess but Daryl Janmaat is an adventurous full-back who is worthy of consideration, while a crippling injury list could result in Jack Colback switching to left-back.
Jonjo Shelvey and Jordan Veretout should feature on set-pieces for their respective sides, Jordan Ayew is included as a speculative selection, while Hugo Lloris gets the nod in goal.
That leaves us with three more positions to fill and we’ve provisionally gone with Jamie Vardy, Ayoze Pérez and Andros Townsend. However, since all three are involved in the Monday Night Football we will have the flexibility to switch, if necessary, once official teams news is confirmed. Townsend might miss out through injury, for example, or you might assess your current standing on the leader-board after Sunday’s result is in and opt for more aggressive choices.
If you do manage to win your ticket you will participate in a 1044-player contest with $30,000 in total prize money up for grabs, paying out the top 255 finishing positions, with a first prize of $5,000 so what have you got to lose?
