Nicholas Pooran Retires at 29

Nicholas Pooran Calls Time on International Career at Just 29

Nicholas Pooran, the explosive former West Indies white-ball captain, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. Over a nine-year career, Pooran amassed 1,983 runs in 61 ODIs and 2,275 runs in 106 T20Is, leaving the game as one of the most dynamic finishers in white-ball cricket.

Pooran’s decision comes just weeks after he opted out of selection for the recent T20I series against England, and more than 18 months since he last featured in an ODI following the West Indies’ exit from the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers. It was only last November—when he celebrated his 100th T20I cap—that he confidently declared he had “100 more T20Is” in him.

“After much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international cricket,” Pooran wrote on social media.
“This game we love has given—and will continue to give—so much: joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and the honour of representing the people of the West Indies… Though this international chapter closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade.”

A Storied Journey in Maroon

  • Debut: April 2016 vs. Pakistan (UAE)
  • First ODI Cap: October 2019 vs. England
  • Captaincy: Appointed white-ball captain in 2022; stepped down after the 2022 T20 World Cup
  • Final Appearance: December 2024 vs. Bangladesh (Kingstown T20I series)

Despite stepping away from international duty, Pooran enjoyed a banner year in 2024—smashing a record 170 sixes, and piling up 524 runs at a 196.25 strike rate in IPL 2025, including five half-centuries. He was widely tipped to spearhead the West Indies’ assault at the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Cricket West Indies paid tribute in a formal statement:
“We extend our sincere gratitude to Nicholas Pooran for his outstanding contributions to West Indies cricket. We salute his achievements and thank him for the moments he has given fans across the region and beyond.”

What’s Next for Pooran?

While his international chapter has ended, Pooran remains a franchise powerhouse. This summer he’s expected to light up:

  • Major League Cricket (MLC) – USA
  • The Hundred – England
  • Caribbean Premier League (CPL)
  • Indian Premier League (IPL)
  • ILT20 – UAE
